oh, and when reading with -pedantic: a byte is usually 8 bits, but there are some (rare, historical) exceptions. which is why networking standards and french refer to a 8-bit quantity as an &#039;octet&#039; (although even the french recognize the ambivalence...)

also, the maximum file name size on ext3 is 255, while on ntfs it&#039;s 255 &#039;UTF16&#039;-units (says Wikipedia, which refers to the NTFS docs, which, likely, made exactly the UCS-2-vs-UTF-16 mistake you mention).</description>
